May 1st homicide investigation - #21-12511

Updated May 3, 2021 at 9:55 a.m. - The Sioux City Police Department has identified 22-year-old Martez L. Harrison of Sioux City as the victim in this weekend’s murder.

We wish to express our sympathies to his family for their loss.

Arrested was 17-year-old Dwight C. Evans of Sioux City who was charged with 1st degree murder, going armed with intent, possession of a controlled substance – marijuana, failure to affix a tax stamp, and assault while participating in a felony. He has been charged as an adult.

Also arrested was 20-year-old Lawrence G. Canady of Sioux City who was charged with willful injury, assault while participating in a felony, assault causing bodily injury or mental illness, and using a juvenile to commit an indictable offense.

The investigation found that Harrison was outside of a bar in the 1400 block of W. 3rd St. waiting for a ride when a verbal altercation started between himself and Canady.

When Harrison’s girlfriend arrived to pick him up, Canady assaulted her and Harrison attempted to intervene.

As Harrison and Canady engaged in a physical altercation, Evans began firing a handgun at Harrison and shot him at close range. Canady continued striking Harrison after he had been shot and was lying on the ground.

Canady and Evens fled the scene and were located later in the morning by officers.

A gun was seized during Evans’ arrest.

During a search of Evans residence, 100g of marijuana was also seized.

The investigation into the murder of Harrison is ongoing.

Original on May 1, 2021 at 6:10 a.m. - On 5/1/21 at approximately 1 :02 AM, officers of the Sioux City Police Department were dispatched to Uncle Dave's Bar for shots fired.

Officers arrived on scene and observed a male lying in the street suffering from a single gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid to the male and he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

At 4:33 AM, officers received information of a male matching the description of the shooter in the 1100 block of W. 21st street. Officers located a male and a handgun.

A 17-year-oldjuvenile male was taken into custody and booked for Murder 1st, Willful Injury, Assault while participating in a felony, and Going armed with intent.

The investigation into this incident is on-going and the name of the deceased is not being released until 24 hours after notification of next-of-kin.
