Shooting at 2201 Gibson St

UPDATE Sept. 5, at 1:45 pm - Involved subject located

While investigating the shooting that had occurred at 2201 Gibson St. on Sept. 4 at 4:18 pm, officers with the Sioux City Police Department had information that a red 2011 Subaru Legacy was involved in the incident.

On Sept. 5, at about 9:20 am, officers located the Subaru Legacy in the area of S. Helen and Glenn Blvd. The driver of the vehicle was detained and found to be in possession of a handgun.

After interviewing the driver, it was determined that he was involved in the shooting at 2201 Gibson St.

Detectives investigating the matter have charged 19-year-old Lawrence G. Canady III of Sioux City with driving without a valid license, operating without owner's consent, and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. No charges have been filed for the incident at 2201 Gibson St. pending further investigation.

The shooting is still under investigation and detectives are speaking to additional subjects that were involved in this incident.

UPDATED Sept 5, 2019 at 9:17 am - time changed from 4:36 pm to 4:18 pm - The Sioux City Police Department received reports of shots being fired at the apartment complex located at 2201 Gibson St. on Sept. 4, 2019 at 4:18 pm.

Officers arriving on the scene located a victim running from the area in the 2300 block of Transit Ave. The 21-old male was suffering from gunshot wounds that appeared to be non-life threatening. He was transported to Mercyone for treatment. His name is not being released at this time.

Several shell casings that had been fired from a handgun were located in the parking lot of 2201 Gibson St.

Officers canvased the area for looking for anyone else that was involved or witnessed the shooting.

It is not known how many people were involved in this matter nor is there a description of the suspect. At the time of this release, the victim was providing limited information.

SCPD brings back bike patrol

Sioux City Officers have started patrolling the streets on two wheels instead of four this summer. Over 20 officers were trained in bicycle patrol this summer after the department purchased bikes though a grant provided by The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Those familiar with the old CAST (Community Action Support Team) Unit will remember Officers on bicycles in the 1990s. 

“We worked with City Neighborhood Services to secure the grant,” said Lt. Kevin Heineman who headed the project for the department. Funds for the bike program came from a Community Development Block Grant and paid for the bicycles and will also partially pay for officer’s wages while on bike patrol.

“Officers working under the grant will ride the bikes in HUD development areas with the primary purpose of having positive contacts with people,” explained Heineman. “Officers can take enforcement action if needed but their main focus is to build a relationship with the community.”

Chief Rex Mueller saw the chance to return to the department’s C.A.S.T. roots as a way to extend the operational capabilities and outreach efforts of the department. “Having the capability to selectively get officer out of the cars and into the communities was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up.” “Our mission of community engagement to build trust is well served by this kind of effort… From a safety standpoint, bikes are also able to patrol areas of the city that are not as accessible to cars such as the riverfront and walking trails” he said.  “I’ve already seen the patrols having a positive impact over the last several weeks we have deployed them.”

As part of the grant, the department also host bike rodeos to help teach kids bike safety and improve their skills. Dates for bike rodeos are not set but will be announced via the department’s social media and webpage.

Officers Shawn Robinson and Jeff Demetri are two of the officers trained for bike patrol. The SCPD started the program in an effort to continue build partnerships with the community and make officers more approachable.

Sioux City Police Department announces "Special Response Static Sticker Program"

The Sioux City Police Department and Sioux City Fire and Rescue is excited to offer our new Special Response Static Sticker Program. The program is free and available to anyone. The four stickers pictured will be available to the public at the Police Department lobby and can also be accessed by asking an officer about the program. These stickers can be placed in the rear window of a vehicle or the front window of a home and let first responders know there may be a party inside that might not respond to verbal commands, or may use alternative methods of communication.

June E. Nylen Donation

The Sioux City Police Department presented the June E. Nylen Cancer Center with a check for $3,460 today. Sworn members of the police department donated money to grow facial hair over the months of November and December, while civilian staff donated money to wear jeans over that same time period.

Officers spent time shopping with less fortunate kids Saturday (12/16). The kids were able to pick out Christmas gifts for their family members with the help of Walmart, the Variety Club, Sioux City Police Department, and Woodbury County Sheriff's Office.

Cancer Survivor/Victim Tribute Patrol Car

Today we rolled out our tribute to all cancer survivors and victims. This regular patrol fleet car is decorated to show our dedication as a department to raising awareness and finding a cure for all forms of cancer. This project is being done in connection with the "No Shave November" fund raiser being conducted with our officers. The Sioux City Police Officers Association and our officers will be donating our proceeds to The June E Nylen Cancer Center at the conclusion of the fund raiser.

Business/Residential Alarm Permit Payment Information

ALL ALARM OWNERS (business & residential) within city limits are required to have an alarm permit with the City of Sioux City. All permits expire on December 31st of every year. **Beginning this year, Sioux City Customer service will begin taking permit payments instead of the Sioux City Police Department. Newest Officer

Officer Calvin Chang was sworn in this morning as the newest member of our department. Officer Chang is also the last officer to be hired by Chief Young, who's last day is today. Officer Chang will be attending the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy starting on Monday. Good luck and welcome!

Captain Rex Mueller named next Chief of the Sioux City Police Department

Captain Rex Mueller was selected to be the next Chief of the Sioux City Police Department, effective 9-1-17 upon Chief Doug Young's retirement. 

Captain Rex Mueller began his career with the Sioux City Police Department in 1996.  Since that time, he has served in a number of positions including Patrol Officer, C.A.S.T. Officer, Crime Stoppers Coordinator, SWAT Entry Team Member, Accident Reconstructionist, and Field Training Officer.  He was promoted to Sergeant in 2004 where he served as the supervisor for the A.S.A.P. Unit and later supervised the Crimes Against Persons Unit in the Detective Bureau.  He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2009 and served as Watch Commander for the Watch 2 and Watch 3 uniform shifts.  In 2016 he was promoted to Captain and currently serves as the Uniformed Bureau Commander and S.W.A.T. Commander.
